Often regarded as the icon of the city of Pondicherry, Promenade Beach (or simply The Promenade) is a beautiful stretch of about 1.5 km. in length. The beach offers the amazing opportunity to savour the beauty of the Bay of Bengal. The Beach Road or Goubert Avenue is the road among the beach which offers an exceptional leisurely walk experience.

The beach is also famous for housing many important heritage sites like the French War Memorial, the Heritage Town Hall, the Old Customs House and Chief Secretariat. In addition, there are many popular statues like those of Joan or Arc, Mahatma Gandhi and Dupleix. The Old Light House is an added attraction to the beach.

Prefer to visit the beach during sunrise for some breathtaking views of the whole area. To enjoy walking along the avenue, prefer to visit in the evening when the traffic is restricted. The beach is not apt for swimming, but offers one to spend some great moments.

Road: Pondicherry is connected to many popular destinations of the region by different roads, out of which the East Coast Road from Chennai offers a spectacular road journey. The beach can be accessed from any part of the city on foot.

Railway: The railway station of Puducherry is only about 1.5 km. from the beach. You can prefer to walk from the station to reach the beach.

Airway: Only about 6 km. from the beach is Pondicherry Airport. From here, you can hire a taxi, a cab or an auto-rickshaw to access the beach.
