History: The park gets its name from the legendary Bandhavgarh Fort, located on the highest hillock of the region called Bandhavgarh Hill. The fort traces its roots to the period of Ramayana and it is believed that Lord Rama gifted the hillock to his brother Lakshmana and hence the name Bandhavgarh (brother’s fort). During the medieval period, the rulers of Rewa converted the forest area into royal game reserve, killing scores of tigers. It was in 1968 that the area was declared a national park and a tiger reserve in 1993.

Geography: Nestled amidst the rustic hills of Satpura Range and Vindhya Range, the park comprises of 32 hills, thick sal forests of North Indian moist deciduous forest origin and grasslands.
