Location: Bandhavgarh National Park is located in Central India in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Popular for one of the most-visited tiger reserves in India, it covers Umaria District and forest divisions of Umaria and Katni.

History: The park gets its name from the legendary Bandhavgarh Fort, located on the highest hillock of the region called Bandhavgarh Hill. The fort traces its roots to the period of Ramayana and it is believed that Lord Rama gifted the hillock to his brother Lakshmana and hence the name Bandhavgarh (brother’s fort). During the medieval period, the rulers of Rewa converted the forest area into royal game reserve, killing scores of tigers. It was in 1968 that the area was declared a national park and a tiger reserve in 1993.

Do You Know? Bandhavgarh was once a home to the remarkable white tigers which eloped due to extensive royal hunting.

Geography:  Nestled amidst the rustic hills of Satpura Range and Vindhya Range, the park comprises of 32 hills, thick sal forests of North Indian moist deciduous forest origin and grasslands. More than 20 streams wash the landscapes, adding unique sparkles to the park. The highest point at 810 m. accommodates the fascinating fort.

Weather: Summers from April-June are extremely hot while winters from November-February promise comfy weather. July to September is monsoon time during which the park remains closed.
