Kashi Vishwanath and Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Yatra: The East Sector, Ex Varanasi

You want the darshan of the eastern two Jyotirlingas. Kashi Vishwanath sits at Varanasi on the Ganga. Baba Baidyanath sits at Deoghar in Jharkhand. On the map they look near each other. In truth the road between them is long. This page plans the leg for you.

What this East sector covers

This trip joins two shrines only. You take Kashi Vishwanath first, then Baba Baidyanath. Varanasi is your base for the start. You do the temple darshan and a boat on the Ganga. Then you move east to Deoghar for Baba Dham.

Kashi Vishwanath and the new Dham corridor

Kashi Vishwanath stands at Varanasi, on the bank of the holy Ganga. Britannica calls Varanasi one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism. The Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor was opened by Prime Minister Modi on 13 December 2021. Now a wide path links the temple to the Ganga at Manikarnika Ghat. The corridor covers about 5.5 acres, with a museum, resting halls, and clean steps down to the river. For your elders, this is a great relief.

The gold spire and the darshan lines at Kashi

The temple is often called the Golden Temple. History records that Maharaja Ranjit Singh gave about one tonne of gold for the spire in 1835. In February 2022 an unnamed South Indian devotee gave about 60 kg more gold for the sanctum. The present temple was built by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, around 1777 to 1780. The temple is run by the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust, whose official portal is shrikashivishwanath.org. For a smoother line, the Trust offers a ticketed Sugam Darshan. The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat

In the evening you must see the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. It happens every day, all year. In summer it starts near 6:45 in the evening, and in winter near 5:45. It runs for about 45 minutes. There is a quieter aarti too. At Assi Ghat, the Subah-e-Banaras morning aarti begins near 5:30 in the morning. Book the boat the evening before.

Baba Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar

Baba Baidyanath Dham stands at Deoghar in Jharkhand. The name Deoghar means the home of the gods. This shrine is rare, because it is both a Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Tradition says the heart of Sati fell here. The main temple is a plain stone tower, about 72 feet tall, facing east. The temple yard holds the central shrine and 21 more temples, so 22 in all, many tied with thick red threads for the bond of Shiva and Shakti.

The panchshool and why Baidyanath is rare

At the top of the temple you will see a panchshool, a rare five-pointed trident. Most Shiva temples carry a three-pointed trishool, not five. The government record notes that parts of the front were built by Puran Mal, an ancestor of the Gidhaur royal house, in 1596. Tradition says Lord Shiva here is Vaidyanath, the lord of healing, who cured Ravana.

The contested Vaidyanath: Deoghar, Parli, or Baijnath

The name Vaidyanath has more than one claim. Deoghar in Jharkhand is the shrine most pilgrims accept and visit. Some hold that the true shrine is Parli Vaijnath in Maharashtra, since the old Sanskrit stotram names Parali. A third group points to Baijnath in Himachal Pradesh. The Government of India has not named one temple as the official Jyotirlinga. So for your yatra, Deoghar is the widely accepted eastern stop.

The Shravani Mela and the kanwar walk

In the month of Shravan, near July and August, Deoghar fills with a huge crowd, the Shravani Mela. Kanwarias fill pots with Ganga water at Sultanganj in Bihar, then walk to Deoghar on foot, about 105 to 109 km, chanting Bol Bam. Government records say about 7 to 8 million devotees come in this month. If you want a calm darshan, do not plan your visit in Shravan.

From Varanasi to Deoghar: the honest logistics

Varanasi and Deoghar are not close. By road it is about 450 to 480 km, roughly 7 to 8 hours. Many pilgrims go by train instead. A Vande Bharat Express now links the two cities, about 456 km, in about 7 hours and 20 minutes. It started in September 2024 and runs six days a week, not on Tuesdays. Other trains stop at Jasidih Junction, about 7 km from the temple. Deoghar also has its own airport, opened in July 2022, but there is no direct flight from Varanasi. For most families the train is the simplest choice.

Dress code, elders and the NRI way

Dress simply at both shrines. At Kashi Vishwanath, phones, cameras, and leather items are usually not allowed near the sanctum, and lockers are provided. At Baba Baidyanath too, leave your leather belt, wallet, and bags at the counter. At Kashi the new corridor is wide and mostly step-free, so a wheelchair moves well. At Deoghar the yard is flat, but the crowd can press in, so go early. No special foreign quota is needed at either temple. You carry your passport and OCI card as photo ID, which also helps for online darshan booking.
