Overview

Tour overview

This Sabarimala darshan package is made for Ayyappa devotees flying from the Gulf. You book your dated virtual queue slot first, fly into Kochi or Trivandrum, drive to Pamba, and trek to the Sannidhanam for darshan of Lord Ayyappa. We help you plan the 41 day vratham, the irumudi kettu, and the climb up the 18 holy steps.

Who is Lord Ayyappa and why you come

Sabarimala is the shrine of Lord Ayyappa, also called Sree Dharma Sastha. It sits on a forest hill in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. Lord Ayyappa is loved across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra and the whole world. For Malayali families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, this yatra is a promise kept year after year. You come as a child of Ayyappa, with a clean heart and the mala around your neck. Black or blue dress marks every devotee on this path. Every pilgrim, rich or poor, walks the same road here. That is the beauty of this shrine.

The 41 day vratham you keep before you travel

The pilgrimage does not begin at the airport. Tradition says it begins on the day you wear the mala. From that day you keep a vratham for 41 days. Stay clean in body and mind. Eat only simple food. Keep away from alcohol, non-veg food and worldly pleasures. Wake early, bathe, and pray. Call every man "swami" and see Ayyappa in all. Many Gulf devotees start the vratham in the UAE and carry the same discipline on the flight. If your leave is short, start the vratham in the Gulf and keep it fully until darshan.

The irumudi kettu and the 18 holy steps

The irumudi kettu is the sacred two part bundle you carry on your head. The front part holds the offerings for Lord Ayyappa, like ghee filled coconut. The back part holds food for your own journey. Tradition says only a devotee who has kept the vratham should fill the irumudi. It is filled at a recognised Ayyappa temple, with a guruswami guiding you, before you leave. This is called kettu nira. Please arrange your kettu nira before you fly, or at a temple near Pamba on the way. The rule is clear and old. Only a pilgrim carrying the irumudi may climb the 18 holy steps, the Pathinettam Padi, into the sanctum. If you have no irumudi, you cannot climb these steps. So the irumudi is not a formality. It is your ticket to the feet of the Lord.

From the Gulf: flights and the best time to travel

Direct flights link Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to Kochi, also called Cochin. Airlines like Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo and Etihad fly this route. You may also fly to Trivandrum. From Kochi airport the drive to Pamba is about 150 to 160 km. From Trivandrum it is a little more. The main season runs from mid November to mid January, in the cool Kerala winter. This suits Gulf families well, as school holidays and long weekends fall near this time. Book your India flights early, because seats to Kochi fill fast in season. Confirm the current fares on the airline websites.

The virtual queue slot you must book first

This is the one step Gulf devotees must not skip. The Travancore Devaswom Board runs an official virtual queue for Sabarimala darshan. You book a dated slot online before you travel. Each day has a limited number of slots, so peak days fill quickly. On busy days the board caps the daily count to manage the crowd. The official portal is sabarimalaonline.org, run by the Travancore Devaswom Board. Pooja bookings and prasadam are handled through the board's own online system. Please book on the official site only, and avoid unofficial agents who charge extra. Confirm the current slot rules and any fee on the official portal. Book your slot the day it opens for your dates, then plan your flights around it. Carry a printout and a soft copy of your slot on your phone.

The road to Pamba and the trek to Sannidhanam

Pamba is the base camp of the yatra. Most pilgrims reach Pamba by road through Kottayam and Erumeli, or through Chalakkayam near the river. From Pamba you climb on foot to the Sannidhanam, the shrine complex at the top. The trek is about 4 to 5 km, and it is steep in parts. One official trek map gives the distance as about 4.8 km, with a climb of over 1,100 metres. You pass Neelimala first, then Appachimedu, then Sabari Peedom, then Saramkuthi, and finally the 18 holy steps. Walk slowly. Rest at the sheds along the way. Drink water often. Most fit pilgrims take about 3 to 5 hours up, but your own time depends on your health and the crowd.

The traditional Erumeli route and petta thullal

Some devotees choose the long forest path from Erumeli. This is the traditional route. At Erumeli, first time pilgrims take part in the petta thullal. Devotees paint their bodies, carry small arrows, and dance to drum beats. Tradition says this act surrenders the ego before the Lord. The full Erumeli forest path is long and hard, about 50 km or more, crossing Azhutha, Karimala and Neelimala. It is only for strong and experienced pilgrims. If this is your first yatra, or you travel with elders, take the short Pamba route instead. You still receive the same darshan and the same blessing.

Dress code, Pamba snan and what to carry

Wear black, dark blue or saffron through the vratham and the climb, and keep the mala on. At Pamba you take a holy bath in the Pampa river, called Pamba snan, before you begin the climb. Carry only what you need. A small torch helps on early morning climbs. Pack your own water bottle, a thin towel, and any daily medicine. Do not carry alcohol, tobacco or non-veg food. Plastic is discouraged on the hill, so keep the forest clean. Mobile network can be weak, so tell your family your plan before you climb.

Food, Annadanam and prasadam

You do not go hungry on this yatra. The Devaswom Board runs a large Annadanam, a free meal hall at the Sannidhanam. It serves free food to lakhs of pilgrims every day the temple is open. Simple hot kanji, rice gruel, and meals are served through the day. The famous prasadam here is aravana payasam, a sweet rice pudding, and appam. You can buy sealed prasadam through the official counters to carry home to the Gulf. Confirm the current prasadam rates on the official board system. On the road you also get simple Kerala food like appam and rice meals at small stalls.

Help for elders: doli, medical and rest

Many Gulf families travel with parents and grandparents. The climb is steep, so plan for elders with care. A doli, also called pallakku, is a chair carried on the shoulders of bearers. It is meant for aged, unwell and disabled pilgrims from Pamba to the Sannidhanam. Arrange the doli at Pamba and confirm the current rate there. The board runs medical help along the route. There are cardiology and first aid centres at Pamba, Neelimala, Appachimedu and the Sannidhanam. If an elder has a heart or knee problem, get a doctor's clearance in the Gulf before you book. Climb early, rest often, and never rush an elder up the steps.

Women of menstruating age: the current position

Many Gulf devotees ask about the entry of women aged 10 to 50. Please read only the plain legal position, and confirm it for your travel dates. On 28 September 2018, the Supreme Court of India, by a 4 to 1 majority, allowed the entry of women of all ages. Many review petitions were then filed. On 14 November 2019 the court kept the review petitions pending and sent larger questions to a bigger bench. The court said the 2018 judgment would hold until the review is decided. As of early 2026, the matter is still before the court and the review remains pending. [VERIFY] Because this is a live legal and social matter, women in this age group should check the latest official position and ground situation before planning travel. We share only what the record says and take no side.

Optional Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple add-on

Many families add the Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple to this yatra. Guruvayur is about 72 km from Kochi airport and about 26 km from Thrissur. The deity is Guruvayurappan, a form of Lord Krishna. The temple keeps a strict traditional dress code, so plan your clothes with care and confirm the current rules on the official Guruvayur Devaswom site. This add-on suits families who fly into Kochi and have one more day. It is a gentle, calm darshan after the hard Sabarimala climb.

Day by day

Day-by-day itinerary

A carefully paced plan, day by day. Tap any day for the stay, meals and altitude detail.

Today you fly from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah to Kochi. The flight takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. From Kochi airport you drive to the Pamba base area, about 150 to 160 km, roughly 4 to 5 hours by road. Try to land in the morning, so you reach the hill area before dark. If you have not filled your irumudi kettu yet, plan a stop at a recognised Ayyappa temple for the kettu nira. Tonight you rest and keep your vratham. Keep the mala on and eat only simple food. What is not allowed: no alcohol, no tobacco, and no non-veg food on this yatra. Elder note: after a long flight, let parents rest fully tonight and drink warm water.

Special Tips for This Day: Carry your printed virtual queue slot and a soft copy on your phone. Network on the hill is weak, so tell your family your plan before you leave the base.

Today you begin the real climb. Reach Pamba early and take your Pamba snan, the holy bath in the Pampa river. Start the trek in the cool morning, before the sun is high. The path to the Sannidhanam is about 4 to 5 km and steep, so walk slow and steady. One official trek map gives it as about 4.8 km. You pass Neelimala, Appachimedu and Saramkuthi on the way. A lesser known fact: the shrine sits inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve forest, so you walk through protected wild land. Carry the irumudi on your head, because only irumudi holders may climb the 18 holy steps. Reach the top, climb the Pathinettam Padi, and have darshan of Lord Ayyappa. Eat free kanji and meals at the Annadanam hall. What is not allowed: you cannot climb the 18 steps without the irumudi kettu. Elder note: book a doli at Pamba for any elder who cannot climb, and confirm the current rate there.

Special Tips for This Day: Start before dawn to beat both the heat and the crowd. Buy sealed aravana payasam at the official counter to carry back to the Gulf.

Today you climb down to Pamba and return to your base. Take the descent slowly, as the steep path is hard on the knees. Rest, eat, and thank the Lord for a safe yatra. If you have booked a second slot, some devotees do one more darshan on a fresh morning. Drink plenty of water and let your body recover. Try simple Kerala appam and rice meals at the small stalls near the base. What is not allowed: do not litter plastic on the hill, as the forest is protected. Elder note: after the climb, watch elders for tiredness and give them a full rest day before any onward travel.

Special Tips for This Day: Keep your prasadam sealed and cool for the flight home. If your knees ache, use a walking stick and take the descent in short stages.

Today you can add a calm darshan at the Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple. Guruvayur is about 72 km from Kochi airport, roughly 2 hours by road. The deity is Guruvayurappan, a loved form of Lord Krishna. The temple keeps a strict traditional dress code, so dress with care and confirm the current rules first. After darshan you drive to Kochi airport for your flight back to the Gulf. If you skip Guruvayur, use today to rest and shop for prasadam before your flight. What is not allowed: western dress is not allowed inside Guruvayur, so plan your clothes. Elder note: keep the airport transfer early, so elders are not rushed at check in.

Special Tips for This Day: Confirm the Guruvayur dress code and darshan timing before you drive. Keep your boarding time and India departure buffer wide, as Kochi traffic can be slow.
