Places to See

The sanctuary which is home to tigers, elephants, bison, gaur, sambhar (Indian deer), lion tailed macaque and many other species is the most exciting of all attractions of Thekkady. Popular tourist trails, like Nature Walk and Periyar Tiger Trail, can be enjoyed to explore these species.

Also called Thekkady Lake, it is an artificial lake formed by Mullaperiyar Dam on Periyar River and one of the must visit places at Thekkady. Boating tours on the lake offer some of the best opportunities to watch animals from close. Depending on the season, diverse migratory birds may also amuse you.

Apart from many amazing trekking and wildlife exploration routes, Thekkady is emerging as an adventure destination for increasing number of tourists taking up bamboo rafting and border hiking. Riding elephants is also an amusing attraction.

Mangala Devi temple located on a hillock within the forest is another notable attraction (though it can be visited only on permission). Kumily near Thekkady has venues where traditions like Kalari (a form of martial art) and Kathakali (a form of dance) can be enjoyed. Watch towers within the sanctuary offer great views of the surroundings. Tea estates and spice plantations at short distances are just not worth missing.
