Enjoy a Marvellous Monsoon Treat at Shivanasamudra Waterfalls

Rejuvenated by the plenty of monsoon rains, River Kaveri (Cauvery) follows a lively journey in the month of August, leaving behind some truly captivating vistas. Among the most compelling of its creations are the segmented waterfalls of Shivanasamudra, a small island town well-known for one of the Asia’s inaugural hydroelectric power stations. To savour the ultimate vigour of monsoons in India, you must consider visiting this superb assemblage of falling water trails.

Location
About 135 km. from Bangalore and only about 75 km. from Mysore, Shivanasamudra lies in the Mandya District of Karnataka. The town is home to many historical temples, the most prominent being one of the three Ranganatha Swamy Temples in the state. The hydroelectric station that can be easily seen near the waterfalls was established way back in 1902 and continues to operate.

The Waterfalls
After splitting into the western and eastern channels, River Kaveri creates twin jumps of outstanding waterfalls, separated from each other by a km. of distance. The first one is called Gaganachukki which is about 90 m. high and creates a huge uproar while descending down through gigantic boulders. The sight is extremely overwhelming and can leave you flabbergasted for hours. It is worth mentioning that the place is not safe for swimming.

The second collection of waterfalls is called Bharachukki, about 69 m. high and comparatively serene and melodious. Here, you feel connected to the nature and have a mind-relaxing experience. Trekking and swimming are possible here, but recommended only for the experts.

Shivanasamudra Waterfalls, though often ranked among the world’s top 100 falls, continue to be unexplored and boast of unblemished beauty. One can enjoy the very delicious Maddur vadas at the restaurants near the falls. Closest railway stations are at Mysore and Bangalore. Those travelling by air may land at the international airport of Bangalore or board a flight to Mysore’s domestic airport. Travel in a taxi from any of the two cities and enjoy a journey full of natural splendour to reach the falls.
