Sikkim Rides High on Responsible Tourism and Attains Limelight Globally

Recently designated as world’s number one tourism spot for 2014 by Lonely Planet, the northeast Indian state of Sikkim is in high spirits with the success of responsible tourism campaign. November celebrates the World Responsible Tourism Day and there is no more suitable place than Sikkim to watch India’ contribution towards the growing trend. Here are some underlying aspects that attract the domestic and international tourists to the region.

Preserving Natural Splendor
The pristine and picturesque landscape of Sikkim is preserved by adopting the measures of eco-tourism. Limited tourists are allowed to access different hotspots and they are advised to use public transport modes and shared transit mediums to leave lesser impact on the environment. The result is that natural vistas and wildlife trails of the state bear reduced burden from tourism.

Rural and Community Based Tourism
The tourism authorities in Sikkim are coming up with innovative ideas to promote the engrossing rural culture of the state among tourists. The motive is to help the local communities gain financial stability through tourism. A number of homestay accommodations have mushroomed up at places like Gangtok, Dzongu, Yuksam, Kewzing and Pastanga. Local residents are encouraged to sell their handicrafts to the visitors.

Protection of cultural heritage and limited footprints of urbanization are the factors that work in Sikkim’s favor. As 2014 is about to begin, the region is expected to make good use of its new recognition.
